The final Winter 2011 Wild Trails grant has been awarded to the Lookout Mountain Conservancy

Category: Announcements, Chattanooga Local News, Trail Work, Access & Environment

March 1, 2011 By Jeff Bartlett

This afternoon, Wild Trails announced that the fifth (and final) $2000 grant from their winter grant cycle will be presented to the Lookout Mountain Conservancy. The grant money will be used to repair and restore a portion of the Guild-Hardy Trail on Lookout Mountain.

Each of these $2000 grants were funded directly by Rock/Creek through the Rock/Creek Trail Series. This funding includes the $27,000 raised by the 2010 StumpJump.

The press release from Wild Trails can be found here. Here is an excerpt from the announcement:

Specifically, the Lookout Mountain Conservancy plans to repair a washed-out portion of the trail, adjacent to Craven’s House, where erosion of a steep hillside has reached the trail edge and will soon begin eroding through the trail. In addition to this construction effort, a particularly zealous patch of kudzu at the upper end of the trail grows unrestrained across the trail itself in the summer months, posing a potential hazard to hikers, bikers and trail runners.

The goal of each Wild Trails grant is to support organizations that further the expansion and protection of trails in the greater Chattanooga area. Five more $2000 grants will be awarded as part of the summer cycle; more information about the Wild Trails grant series can be found here.
