Rock/Creek and Andrew Kornylak today announce the latest video from the Rock/Creek Trail Series. This latest installment features Andy Collee’s marathon training advice. He chose Rock/Creek’s Scenic City Trail Marathon as his 500th run of marathon distance or longer. Throughout the 2010 season, Kornylak and Rock/Creek have collaborated to get the word out about the beautiful trails in the Chattanooga region through inspirational viral videos. The video is available online on the Scenic City Trail Marathon Web site: https://www.rockcreek.com/trailmarathon/
Collee’s narration sets the tone for telling the story of the Marathon, which took place on TVA’s Raccoon Mountain Pumped Storage Facility outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. "I couldn’t have picked a better trail marathon to do my 500th; I really am impressed," he says: "This is a fabulous community [and] a great sport."
Collee’s story of perseverance and adventure sets the tone for this popular race. He goes from running his first marathon on the road to trying trail running and eventually falling in love with it. As Kornylak explains, "Every race has a story. Andy’s was particularly interesting, not only for the astonishing number of long races he has done, but for his unique outlook and advice that should inspire both veteran distance runners and beginners alike. After talking to him you get the feeling that long trail runs like this one are accessible to anyone. I’m off for a trail run now!"

Collee reveals his secret to so many successful race finishes: NPR on the headphones and a philosophy that "when you get to this point in time, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do." Whether it’s Car Talk or Morning Edition, Collee has been listening to NPR to get him through the 500 races he’s run since 1991 at the marathon or ultramarathon distance. He talks about rituals both pre- and post-race, including stretches, muscle rubs, electrolyte drinks, fig bars, and his signature race wear: a collared dress shirt and tights.
Andrew Kornylak shot the video with his assistant Sharif Hassan and intern Brett May and used a Panasonic HPX170 P2 video camera as well as a Nikon D3s and D90 for video and time-lapse sequences.
The race was the third in this year’s Rock/Creek Trail Series and was part of the Vasque PROJECT. The race was made possible through the sponsorship of various Rock/Creek vendors, including SmartWool, Marmot, Patagonia, The North Face, Hammer Nutrition, Outdoor Research, and local supporter Greenlife Grocery. All proceeds from the race benefit Wild Trails, a new 501©(3) nonprofit working to promote the use, expansion, and protection of trails in greater Chattanooga.
