Nick Whited
Age: 31
Occupation: Counselor- focusing on traumatic brain injuries and substance abuse addictions
I’ve been running a majority of my life, finally figuring out the proper ways to train. I love to train for trail races and road races alike; being a former 4:17 miler, I have a fondness for the track races as well and enjoy the aspects of racing and socializing. I’m 31 years old and recently was married on October 31, 2009 to Maria and we live in Bluefield, VA – the tallest city east of the Mississippi.
Years Running: 16 years
Favorite Trail Race: Mount Mitchell Challenge, Iron Mountain 50 Miler, New River 50k
Favorite Training Trail: The Appalachian Trail
What I like about running:
The challenge of getting out everyday and enjoying the scenery. The feeling of nerves and fatigue on race day and when they are both gone after the starting gun.
Tips for other runners:
Don’t overtrain; enjoy the journey; and hire a coach – it will make a difference in your running at any level.
Lifelong Running Goals:
To continue to live a healthy lifestyle and encourage others to participate in the sport that has treated me so well and to continue to have an impact on the environmental aspect of trails and helping create more trails in local areas.
2009 Races and Past Accomplishments:
Injured and sick most of the spring (over training)
Found a balance in the summer, placing 2nd in the gnarly West Virginia Highland Sky 40 Mile ultra, then placing 20th in the deep Charleston, WV 15 mile road race in 1:35.20, a 2nd at the Odyssey Trail Marathon in Covington, VA finishing under the old CR, then finishing 3rd at the New River 50k before ending the season with a horrid performance at JFK (injured).
Ended up with a 16:59 5k on the roads as well.
4:17 mile PR
Currently working on my PhD in Pastoral Care Counseling.
2008 Season:
Frosty 50k 4th

Comments about SmartWool Headliner:
This cap does it all. It provides super warmth despite it being so lightweight and thin. I’ve utilized this handy piece in numerous races where elevation changes occur rapidly so I can stuff it in my shorts and use it again when I get chilled. It is also very durable as I have had it for over 4 years and it still looks brand new.

Comments about Ultimate Direction Fastdraw Plus:
I’ve relied on ultimate direction for years. These hand helds hold up, and I can atest to that. I have taken numerous spills with my (original one from almost 10 years ago) bottle and strap taking the brunt many times; despite some slight wear signs it still holds up. The strap fits well and allows my hand to breath in hot weather. When I trail race I always rely on this handy little bottle and strap to get me through to the finish.

Comments about Darn Tough Coolmax 1/4 Sock:
Simply put, these socks LAST! I’m still using my original pair from four years ago, talk about DARN TOUGH. These socks are made in the USA and are comfortable beyond description. The coolmax does not last as long as the merino wool versions but cannot be beat in the summer months. When I show up to race an ultra or a road race, you can count on me wearing these comfortable socks that have never given me a blister, even on my 35 mile 7 ½ hour trek on the AT (Appalachian Trail) where 70% of the run was in ankle deep water from recent flooding.

Comments about Mountain Khakis Teton Twill Pant (Men’s):
The Nano Puff is indeed light, warm, compressible, etc. I also like to wear it running in cold temps. The Nano Puff heats up quickly, so running temps for this piece are single digits to teens. I normally wear it when I’m running at or below base pace, anything more and it would be too warm. It has great wind protection also for those cold, windy runs.
